Marvin Glenn was born on June 19th, 1912.  His father, Ira Glenn, was from Texas and his mother was from Norway.  The Glenn family had homesteaded in Arizona in 1896 and the J Bar A Ranch was proved on in 1907.  Marvin was a cowboy in every sense of the word.  From roping wild cattle to branding on the range, he raised and rode good rock-footed horses and mules, trailed up a lot of calf-killing lions, shod all his own horses and always tipped his hat to the ladies.

Graduating from Douglas High School as an All-State track and football star, Marvin attended Lamson’s Business College in Phoenix and that is where he met Margaret Young.

Marvin married Margaret, who came into the Glenn family from a dairy family and knew the definition of hard work and long hours.  Marvin and Margaret spent their whole lives ranching the J Bar A Ranch in Hunt Canyon, in the south end of the Chiricahua Mountains.  There they raised their daughter Janet and their son Warner, hosted hunting clients, boarded young kids from the city in the summer months, gardened, butchered their own beef, helped their neighbors and portrayed the classic life of the American cattle rancher.  

Marvin was active in an early cattleman’s organization called the Southern Chiricahua Stockman’s Association, which was founded in 1919 and ended in 1948.  This group of ranchers and permittees met on a regular basis and faced issues including US Forest Service policies, cattle prices, encroachment on open spaces, wildlife management, and the effects of drought.  Marvin and Margaret played a dominant role in the early years of the organization and structuring of the Cowbelles and were members in good standing of the Cochise Graham Cattle Growers Association.
